Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 110: Tired Of Teenagers!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Mar 15 2020

Hello horror fans, in this episode Rhias Hall and Jennifer Lovely invite you to get off their lawn, as they talk about their favorite films that don’t have any young ‘uns in them (or at least not in a central role). You won’t find any 25 year old teenagers with perfect skin here, just cranky codgers and the middle-aged maladjusted.

However, they didn’t hit my favorite, once-more-into-the-breach horror movie, Bubba Ho-Tep. Who doesn’t want to watch elderly Elvis and black JFK fight a mummy in a retirement home? Hopefully no one I know. Enjoy!

Happy Halloween, Latin listeners! This episode is all about horror tropes, and features Rhias Hall of The Villain EditJeff Harris of Fanboy News Network, and perennial favorite Jillian Venters of Gothic Charm School.

They talk about the cliches they love, the ones they hate, and digress a little into the days of yore when Vampire: the Masquerade LARPers walked the Earth. We hope your pumpkin patch is the most sincere tonight!

DRtL is back after its bye week to bring you more horror goodness. This time Jennifer is joined by Handsome Boyfriend Jim to talk about how to share the movies you love with someone you love. Jen and Jim have a lot of common ground, but also some divergent tastes in films, so if you’ve ever wondered about how to broach the subject with your better half, this one’s for you!

DRtL Episode FIFTY: Our Top Fifty Favorite Horror Movies!

1 Comment | This entry was posted on Oct 10 2016

“Let’s make this bullshit happen!”

” …. Is that going to be our new motto from now on? Actually, that might look good on stickers, now that I think about it.”

So hey, check us out! Fifty episodes! That’s kind of a lot! And to celebrate, we are counting down the TOP FIFTY HORROR MOVIES OF ALL TIME!

Okay, well, no. We’re not going to pretend that we’re being at all objective. What we’re actually doing is our Our Top Fifty Favorite Horror Movies! You’re actually getting more than fifty, because Jennifer and Michael have each brought their own lists, so listen in as they compare the movies they love the most. (Presented in chronological order, so as not to descend into complete chaos.) Just in time for you to figure out what you want to watch for Halloween!

All this and more, as Jen tells us about a recent unpleasant incident in a movie theater, a documentary on the murder of Kitty Genovese, and completely spoils the ending of “The Changeling!”

We also talk about movies we’ve seen recently, including Blair Witch. If you just want to skip directly ahead to the Top Fifty goodness, you will find it at the 27-minutes-and-15-seconds mark.

Hope you enjoy this one!

DRTL Episode 41: Doubles and Doppelgangers!

No, you’re not seeing double — this really is another episode of Don’t Read the Latin, after just two weeks! On time, in other words! Believe me, no one’s more surprised by that than we are. Won’t you both sit down? Wait, weren’t there two of you just a moment ago? We could have sworn ….

Oh, well. This time out, Michael Montoure and Jennifer Lovely, your Twosome of Terror, have doubled down on their research to bring you Doubles and Doppelgängers, a look into the twins, clones, shapeshifters, and other creepy identical duplicates that have graced the silver screen over the years. Grab a pair of headphones and give it a listen. If you like it, don’t forget to leave us a comment. Or two.

DRtL Episode 37: Folklore and Fairy Tales!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jan 25 2016

Can you believe it? We’ve done thirty-seven episodes! (“In a row?”)

This time out, we wander off into the woods to talk about horror movies inspired by fairy tales and folklore, or even just movies that have that fairy tale feel to them, and we delve into why horror movies are the direct modern descendant of these ancient tales. Before we get to the subject, though, we wander off the path a bit to talk about the recent loss of pop culture icons David Bowie and Alan Rickman.

(Note: Jennifer refers at one point to a movie called “Tooth Fairy.” She was actually referring to “Darkness Falls,” which features that mythical creature. “Tooth Fairy” is, in fact, a family-friendly 2010 comedy film starring Dwayne Johnson. DRtL regrets the error.)

DRtL Episode 35: The Best of 2015!

Wait a minute, what’s that? Peeking out from under the branches of the Christmas tree that’s starting to drop needles onto your living room floor? Why, it looks like Satan — excuse me, I mean Santa — has left you one last Christmas present! And it’s just what you wanted — a brand new episode of Don’t Read the Latin! You must have been good this year.

This time out, we look back at 2015’s crop of horror movies — what was great, what was terrible (although we don’t waste much time talking about that), and which movies merely deserved our 2015 “You Tried” Participation Medal. Jennifer and Michael are joined by special guests Jeff Harris of Fanboy News Network and Jillian Venters of Gothic Charm School!

Special thanks to AFK Tavern for actually being open at the godforsaken hours of the procrastination-driven, insomnia-fueled editing of this episode!

And that’s it for us for this year! We will talk to you all in 2016! Happy holidays!

DRtL Episode 30: Wes Craven Retrospective

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Sep 21 2015

Apologies for the delay with this episode — it’s even later than we said it was going to be when we said it was going to be late.

We needed a little extra time to pull this one together. We were both saddened to learn of the recent passing of Wes Craven, who pretty much single-handedly reinvented the horror movie genre over the course of his career — not just once, but three times.

Montoure talks about movies that make you feel unsafe, Jennifer talks about getting to meet Robert Englund, and so much more.

DRtL Episode 27: Movies You May Have Missed!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jul 27 2015

Welcome back, fiends! This time, your horror hosts are taking a look back at the last ten years of horror films and trying to bring to light the movies that may have flown under your radar when they were released. A lot of top-notch recommendations this episode.

We’re posting this slightly later in the day than usual due to some audio issues that we weren’t quite able to completely resolve, so we apologize for the sound quality on this one. There’s kind of a background echo to it all that sounds a little like robots gargling underwater, and it was present in the original recording, so we’re going to be looking into improving our microphone setup in future. Hope it’s not too distracting.

Questions, comments, things you’d like to hear in future episodes? Let us know! We’d love to read your feedback on the show. And as always, don’t forget to share, reblog, rate us on iTunes, or just kidnap people off the street and force them to listen to the podcast while tied up in your basement. Enjoy!

DRtL Episode 25: Hail to the King!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jun 22 2015

DSCN2582Hail to the King — namely, Stephen King, that household name of horror, the Maine Man himself! As any horror fan will tell you, Stephen King has had more than his fair share of movie adaptations, not all of them good. Well — maybe, most of them really not that good. But! We persevered here at DRtL, and dove right into our retrospective. We mostly remembered King’s films as being fairly light, fun, popcorn movies — but join us as we realize how wrong we were, and just how many of the genuinely horrifying aspects of human nature are lurking under the surface of King’s work, like a clown in a sewer.

Not to say we didn’t have fun with the topic. See for yourself. Or, I guess, hear for yourself!
