DRtL Episode FIFTY: Our Top Fifty Favorite Horror Movies!
“Let’s make this bullshit happen!”
” …. Is that going to be our new motto from now on? Actually, that might look good on stickers, now that I think about it.”
So hey, check us out! Fifty episodes! That’s kind of a lot! And to celebrate, we are counting down the TOP FIFTY HORROR MOVIES OF ALL TIME!
Okay, well, no. We’re not going to pretend that we’re being at all objective. What we’re actually doing is our Our Top Fifty Favorite Horror Movies! You’re actually getting more than fifty, because Jennifer and Michael have each brought their own lists, so listen in as they compare the movies they love the most. (Presented in chronological order, so as not to descend into complete chaos.) Just in time for you to figure out what you want to watch for Halloween!
All this and more, as Jen tells us about a recent unpleasant incident in a movie theater, a documentary on the murder of Kitty Genovese, and completely spoils the ending of “The Changeling!”
We also talk about movies we’ve seen recently, including Blair Witch. If you just want to skip directly ahead to the Top Fifty goodness, you will find it at the 27-minutes-and-15-seconds mark.
Hope you enjoy this one!

DRtL Episode 46: Horror Double Features!
If you’re starting to plan your Halloween party — and if you’re not, you’d better get on that, you only have 104 days left — we have totally got you covered this episode. Want to show your friends a couple of movies? This episode we talk about Horror Double Features and give our picks for what movies pair together well, like pairing cheeses and fine wines. While we’re at it, we talk about just what exactly makes two movies go together well as a single viewing.
Spoiler Warnings
We discuss the endings of both 10 Cloverfield Lane and Ex Machina. If you don’t want to hear the details, skip forward a couple of minutes when you hear us mention those titles.
Technical Notes:
We mention at the beginning of this episode that we were recording it on our laptop and on our new audio recorder, because Montoure didn’t trust that the recording was actually, you know, recording. And it’s a damn good thing he’s paranoid, because it turns out that the recorder did not save a file at all. The quality the first time we used it was great, and it will be a fine tool to add to our podcasting arsenal if we can ever figure out how to use the damn thing.
The Bag of Fucks
We mention in passing The Bag of Fucks, which is an awesome hand-made creation by our friend Dmitri Arbacauskas at Tormented Artifacts. When you have just run out of fucks to give, here’s the bag you could load some more into. (Or you can just open the bag if you want to show people that it is, indeed, empty.) You can get one of these beauties here if you are so inclined.
Other Podcasts
Jennifer mentions a few of her new favorites among the podcasts she listens to, so if you’d like to check those out, here they are:
In the News
Since we brought up Chopping Mall, a movie about security robots gone rogue in a shopping center, we naturally talked about a related story in the news recently, and in case you missed it, here it is: A mall security robot has knocked down and run over a toddler in Silicon Valley.
Thanks for Listening!

DRtL Episode 40: Southern Horror!
Welcome back, sugar — won’t you set down for a spell? There you are, settle right in, bless your heart. Thank you so much for joining us for a little Southern hospitality as we sit by the fire and talk about Southern Horror!
We will also be talking about the related-but-slightly-separate Southern Gothic genre, which Tennessee Williams described as writing fiction that captures “an intuition, of an underlying dreadfulness in modern experience.” Which is something we can all relate to, don’t you think?
Join us as we break down our favorite horror films that take place deep in the American South, including some that could only tenuously be said to take place in the South, including one that we were just straight up completely wrong about. (Michael brings up The Others, which, in fact, takes place in freakin’ England. DRtL regrets the error.)

Bonus Features
Jennifer talks about her subscription to Horror Block, Nerd Block’s horror box subscription that provides her with hand-selected toys, T-shirts, and more surprises every month. (We are not affiliated with this site — Jennifer is just a happy customer.) You can sign up for Horror Block here, if you are so inclined.
We mention “Mama,” the original short film that Guillermo del Toro helped turn into a . . . well, sadly-inferior feature film. But the original hasn’t lost any of its intensity. You can watch it here:
Michael makes fun of the “Look at me, I’m burning” line from Silent Hill, because — well, just watch:
Finally, courtesy of Jim Cartwright, we have this article that’s right up our allery: Report: Leading Cause Of Death Still Venturing Beyond The Pines.

DRtL Episode 29: Wolf at the Door!
Jennifer Lovely was unable to make it to a recording session this week, since she is in the process of moving and is busy doing All the Things, so instead Michael Montoure is joined by horror movie aficionado Miranda Wolf! We’ve been meaning to have Miranda on the podcast for ages, and this seemed like a good time to do it.
We kind of flirt with the idea of having an overall theme for the episode, such as Slasher Movies, but it never quite happens. Join us as we talk instead about 80’s slasher movies; Star Trek and Babylon 5 fans fighting in the streets; Montoure’s literal scar from a science fiction convention; differences between the Hannibal TV series, books, and films; ideas for slasher movie role-playing games and the horror board game Betrayal at House on the Hill; puns about feet (so very, very many puns about feet); the literal and figurative horrors that are lurking within Miranda’s Netflix queue; and so much more!

DRtL Episode 27: Movies You May Have Missed!
Welcome back, fiends! This time, your horror hosts are taking a look back at the last ten years of horror films and trying to bring to light the movies that may have flown under your radar when they were released. A lot of top-notch recommendations this episode.
We’re posting this slightly later in the day than usual due to some audio issues that we weren’t quite able to completely resolve, so we apologize for the sound quality on this one. There’s kind of a background echo to it all that sounds a little like robots gargling underwater, and it was present in the original recording, so we’re going to be looking into improving our microphone setup in future. Hope it’s not too distracting.
Questions, comments, things you’d like to hear in future episodes? Let us know! We’d love to read your feedback on the show. And as always, don’t forget to share, reblog, rate us on iTunes, or just kidnap people off the street and force them to listen to the podcast while tied up in your basement. Enjoy!

DRtL Episode 26: Brains! I Mean, Zombies!
Welcome back to Don’t Read the Latin, the podcast that brings you horror movie news, reviews, and opinions every two weeks! Or three weeks. Or thereabouts. (I’d swear we used to be better at this.)
Anyway, join us as we come lurching back from the grave to discuss zombies! Even though neither Michael nor Jen consider ourselves zombie fans, per se, it turns out there are a ton of zombie films we really like. A whole horde of them, you might say. Although it turns out we have our disagreements as to just what, exactly, constitutes a zombie film ….
Look At Our Shorts!
Curious about the zombie kangaroo short film Michael mentions? Well, of course you are, right? Here it is — WATERBORNE:
Also, just to round things out, here’s another short film that we didn’t remember to mention during the podcast, but a couple of listeners had recommended it to us and it’s pretty damn awesome — THRESHER.

Spread the Word!
A zombie outbreak spreads pretty quickly. But word-of-mouth about a podcast doesn’t go quite so far and wide. If you love Don’t Read the Latin — and we sure hope you do — won’t you take a minute to help other horror fans find us by clicking one of the social sharing buttons below, or leave us a review on iTunes? It means the world to us. Thanks!

Episode Nineteen: When Aliens Attack!
“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” ― Arthur C. Clarke
Lock all your windows, grab your tinfoil hats and your shotguns, and get ready to hide in your closets, because they’re almost here! The aliens are coming!
…. Okay, well, no. Probably not. But the latest episode of Don’t Read the Latin! is here, and that’s almost as scary! You can put your shotgun down, but you might want to hold on to that tinfoil hat.
Join Jennifer and Michael as they talk about their favorite alien horrors, a heaping handful of guilty pleasures, and a few movies that just didn’t work for them. And stick around for the end, for a discussion of just why movies about aliens scare us so much, and for a few words about Michael’s experiences with UFOs in his childhood!
Put on the headphones, lean back, and try to ignore the strange tall figures and the blinding bright light — the experiment is about to begin ….

Episode Eleven: Horror Comedies
Welcome to another Halloween season episode of your favorite horror movie podcast! (At least, we assume we’re your favorite horror movie podcast. If we’re not, please don’t tell us.)
In this episode, Jennifer rants about Kevin Smith, whose recent film, “Tusk,” seems to be one inside joke aimed at the fans of podcast. (We here at Don’t Read the Latin promise that if we ever make a movie of our own, we’re not going to just pander to our existing fanbase — we intend to pander to everyone.)
We also talk about economy of storytelling, Harlan Ellison, Jen’s Big Black Gothic Yard Sale, and Michael’s upcoming Halloween reading!
No Context For You
“Speaking of soft-core pornography …. ”
“I’m Aware I’m making poor choices.”
“I have a whole bunch of ‘Night of the … ‘ movies.”
Speaking of Michael’s Halloween reading:
