Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 110: Tired Of Teenagers!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Mar 15 2020

Hello horror fans, in this episode Rhias Hall and Jennifer Lovely invite you to get off their lawn, as they talk about their favorite films that don’t have any young ‘uns in them (or at least not in a central role). You won’t find any 25 year old teenagers with perfect skin here, just cranky codgers and the middle-aged maladjusted.

However, they didn’t hit my favorite, once-more-into-the-breach horror movie, Bubba Ho-Tep. Who doesn’t want to watch elderly Elvis and black JFK fight a mummy in a retirement home? Hopefully no one I know. Enjoy!

As foretold in last episode’s micommunication, this week your hosts discuss horror that happens in one place (but not in a house, since they just did that). Listen as Jennifer Lovely gives credit where it’s due for a director she dislikes, and Rhias Hall apologizes to Dave Navarro. Plus Handsome Husband Jim goes 1-1 for film recommendations!

Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 79: Subjective Reality!

Jennifer and Rhias are back… or are they? This week’s topic are movies with unreliable narrators, strange twists, and reality shifts, so who knows if this episode is even real? We hope your enjoyment of this episode is real, regardless!

Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 67: Tropes Galore!

Happy Halloween, Latin listeners! This episode is all about horror tropes, and features Rhias Hall of The Villain EditJeff Harris of Fanboy News Network, and perennial favorite Jillian Venters of Gothic Charm School.

They talk about the cliches they love, the ones they hate, and digress a little into the days of yore when Vampire: the Masquerade LARPers walked the Earth. We hope your pumpkin patch is the most sincere tonight!

DRtL Episode 43: John Carpenter!

Before you panic — no, he’s not dead. I know, the last time we did an episode about the work of a single director was our Wes Craven Retrospective shortly after he passed, but this time we’re just doing the episode because we just really, really like John Carpenter movies. Although not always the same ones! Listen to the episode to find out more.

We were partly inspired to do this episode by the John Carpenter Retrospective Tour, which will be in Seattle on June 14th! And may be coming soon to a city near you! Check out the tour page for details.

DRtL Episode 22: Curses and Premonitions!

Welcome back — finally — to Don’t Read the Latin! We’re back after something like a solid month of not-podcasting, so let’s see if we still remember how to do this! We would have had this episode done much sooner, but we were delayed by Michael’s illness and then Jennifer’s surgery, almost as if we were …. cursed. Hmmm.

Anyway! Join us as we wax rhapsodic about It Follows, visit Jen’s Documentary Corner, and talk about the renaissance of excellent synthesizer-based horror soundtracks we’ve been getting lately. (And, not coincidentally, talk about Jen’s love of collecting movie soundtracks on vinyl.)

Music Bonus!

Here are a couple of links to the albums that Michael mentions this episode:

That second one is pay-what-you-want over at Bandcamp, so definitely check both of them out for retro synth-y goodness.

Shout-Outs!

There are a couple of listeners we wanted to thank — first of all, thanks to commenter Kylie for her suggestion of Noroi: The Curse, which Michael watched based on her recommendation. Fun movie!

Secondly, many thanks to the listener who ran into Michael at Emerald City Comicon and told him this was her favorite podcast! Very, very cool. You made our month. (He didn’t catch your name, though! Let us know who you are!)
