Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 98: Hispanic Horror!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jun 30 2019

Hello again, Latin Listeners, this time Rhias Hall and Jennifer Lovely look at Spanish spookiness, Mexican macabre, Honduran horror, and Venezuelan… vampirism? Okay, that kind of got away from me there.

Plus, your hosts out themselves as pro wrestling fans, and you’ll hear Rhias use the term, “Inferred boners”, which is now the name of my Motley Crue cover band. Enjoy!

Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 93: You Should Watch This!

Hey Latin fans, we’re back again, and this time around Rhias Hall was under the weather, so Jennifer Lovely called an audible and brought in me, Handsome Husband Jim for a show about hidden gems from the last 10 years. We have different tastes, so they’re very different lists.

We also go over a couple of new movies, like Pet Sematary, but we cut the spoilery stuff to go after the credits. So if you want the whole truth of our opinions, keep listening like it was a Marvel movie for that after-credits goodness!

Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 86: Horror in Houses!

Welcome back to Don’t Read the Latin, where two older ladies argue! (Trust me, that’ll make more sense after you listen.) This one is about horror movies set in houses… or at least that was the idea. Jennifer Lovely and Rhias Hall take you to a cul-de-sac of creepiness, so lock your doors and stay safe!

DRtL Episode 51: Time Loops and Time Travel!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Oct 31 2016

Happy Halloween, Latin Club! We’re excited to get to bring you a new episode on our favorite holiday of the year. This time (ha! Get it?), we’re talking about Time Loops and Time Travel! (And amazingly enough, Michael somehow gets through the entire episode without mentioning Doctor Who even once!) Also, Jen talks about taking the Scarecrow Video Psychotronic Challenge, and about Shudder, the curated Amazon Video horror-movie channel!

Spoiler Warnings — Usually, we try not to give away crucial plot elements of the movies we discuss on DRtL, but that was a little tricky with this episode — since with a lot of the films we mention here, the very fact that the plot does involve time-travel shenanigans is actually meant to be a surprise. So if you are particularly spoiler-sensitive, you might want to skip this episode, and you maybe shouldn’t even look at the tags on the blog post. Sorry!

Alternately, if you encounter any spoilers you wish you hadn’t heard — just go back in time and warn yourself not to listen! Problem solved.

(Looking for something a little more seasonally-themed? Hop in our time machine and travel all the way back to 2014’s Episode 10: It Happened on Halloween! for an episode that’s all about movies set on or around Halloween!)

DRtL Episode 39: Horror Heroines!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Mar 14 2016

…. And once again after slightly too long a hiatus, we return once more with another episode of Don’t Read the Latin!

This time out, we’re talking about heroines in horror. Horror movies tend to have more female protagonists than practically any other genre, which is something we both love about them. At some point, we plan on having a Feminism in Horror episode where we’ll delve into why we think that is and examine just how horror treats its female characters. But for now, we just want to talk about some scream queens we’ve known and loved, from our favorite classic final girls all the way to, well, The Final Girls. Give it a listen, tell your friends, and as always, we look forward to your comments.

DRtL Episode 29: Wolf at the Door!

Jennifer Lovely was unable to make it to a recording session this week, since she is in the process of moving and is busy doing All the Things, so instead Michael Montoure is joined by horror movie aficionado Miranda Wolf! We’ve been meaning to have Miranda on the podcast for ages, and this seemed like a good time to do it.

We kind of flirt with the idea of having an overall theme for the episode, such as Slasher Movies, but it never quite happens. Join us as we talk instead about 80’s slasher movies; Star Trek and Babylon 5 fans fighting in the streets; Montoure’s literal scar from a science fiction convention; differences between the Hannibal TV series, books, and films; ideas for slasher movie role-playing games and the horror board game Betrayal at House on the Hill; puns about feet (so very, very many puns about feet); the literal and figurative horrors that are lurking within Miranda’s Netflix queue; and so much more!

DRtL Episode 28: Comfort Movies!

You know what we’re talking about — you’re home for a sick day, or maybe you’ve just straight-up run out of fucks. In either case, it’s time to crash on the couch with a pint of ice cream. Or maybe not — maybe it’s just time to try to get something done around the house that you’ve been putting off, like tackling that mountain of laundry, and you just want a movie to put on that won’t demand your full attention.

However it goes, you reach for a comfort movie — something you’ve already seen a zillion times, but just don’t get tired of. The cinematic equivalent of comfort food. A big ol’ audio-visual bowl of macaroni and cheese. Maybe with the emphasis on “cheese.” (As such, this episode sometimes strays way, way far out of strict horror movie territory. We promise you’ll be entertained anyway.)

We are joined this time by the always-charming Jillian Venters, the Lady of the Manners herself, from Gothic Charm School!

DRtL Episode 27: Movies You May Have Missed!

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jul 27 2015

Welcome back, fiends! This time, your horror hosts are taking a look back at the last ten years of horror films and trying to bring to light the movies that may have flown under your radar when they were released. A lot of top-notch recommendations this episode.

We’re posting this slightly later in the day than usual due to some audio issues that we weren’t quite able to completely resolve, so we apologize for the sound quality on this one. There’s kind of a background echo to it all that sounds a little like robots gargling underwater, and it was present in the original recording, so we’re going to be looking into improving our microphone setup in future. Hope it’s not too distracting.

Questions, comments, things you’d like to hear in future episodes? Let us know! We’d love to read your feedback on the show. And as always, don’t forget to share, reblog, rate us on iTunes, or just kidnap people off the street and force them to listen to the podcast while tied up in your basement. Enjoy!
